3M™ Boron Carbide Abrasive Powders are made of high-purity boron carbide, which is sometimes called “black diamond” for its hardness and chemical resistance. 3M boron carbide abrasive powders are suitable for lapping and sawing of a wide variety of technical ceramics (alumina, zirconia or silicon carbide), tungsten carbide, sapphire, synthetic gemstones, and other hard and super hard materials.
3M™ Boron Carbide Abrasive Powders are made of high-purity boron carbide, which is sometimes called “black diamond” for its hardness and chemical resistance. 3M boron carbide abrasive powders are most suitable for lapping and sawing of a wide variety of technical ceramics (e.g. tungsten carbide), sapphire, synthetic gemstones, and other hard and super hard materials. The advantage of using 3M boron carbide grits instead of silicon carbide, tungsten carbide or titanium carbide is that, unlike these other lapping agents, boron carbide has substantially higher hardness. It allows rapid machining, making it a timesaving option for machining wear resistant materials such as: tungsten carbide; technical ceramics, including alumina oxide (Al2O3), zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and silicon carbide (SiC); and other known hard materials. Boron carbide gives a non-mirror-like smooth appearance to the lapped surface. 3M boron carbide powders are available in grit sizes according to FEPA standards.
